Volunteers required

As you are probably aware our Group Scout Leader, Ben, is getting married next month.
I am arranging a "Guard of Honour" for when Ben and Gail leave the church, so volunteers are needed to perform this role.
I need 20 Scouts/explorers to perform this role. Uniform will be worn and turnout MUST be immaculate.

Ammendment to program

Christmas Hike SATURDAY 19th December

Okay here are details of the Christmas hike.

We will be meeting outside Ashgate Croft School and leaving at 9.30am sharp on the Saturday morning.
Please ensure you have all the correct gear, waterproofs, warm clothing, decent footwear, packed lunch & warm drink. Anyone not deemed to have suitable clothing will not be allowed to take part.
We will then drive in convoy to Castleton where the walk will start around the Mam Tor peak. It is anticipated to last approx 4 hrs.

Transport.
The leaders will be taking their own cars and will accomodate passengers where we can, but we ask that parents can help out with the transportation. If you can offer a lift it would be appreciated. Parents are welcome to come along, but please make sure you have suitable clothing also.

Meeting Friday 11th December

Hi folks
Don't forget this Friday is the Christmas party night.
You are welcome to bring food and games for a bring & eat and play night.
Don't forget this is the last Friday night meeting before Christmas.
The following week will be our annual Christmas hike on the Saturday morning so lets have a good turnout this year.
Don't forget you will need warm clothing, wet weather gear, hat, gloves, a packed lunch and a warm drink and of course a day sack. Make sure you have suitable footwear. We will be doing a kit inspection before we set off. If you don't have suitable clothing then unfortunately you will not be able to join in. At this time of year the weather can change quite quickly in the Peaks and can get very cold and wet. The last thing we want is for you to get wet and cold and be poorly for Christmas so make sure you have the gear listed above.

We will be losing a few Scouts to the Explorers at the end of this term and would like to wish you all continued success with your Scouting experience.

I would also just like to thank everyone for their involvement this year, both staff and Scouts, and all the parents for their continued support, and hope you all have a good Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Remembrance Sunday

A big thank you to all those that turned up to the service on Sunday. The turnout was good and we have had very positive comments from members of the congregation about how please they were to see our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts there.

We performed a short drama showing the importance of peace and sharing, and several of our members also presented readings and poems.

Winners!

A big 'congratulations!' goes out to the two teams ('Rother' and 'Hippos(!)') who took part in the County Rampage competition held at Drum Hill Scout Camp this weekend. Both teams did excellently, with one winning the first place trophy.

The rest of the weekend was taken up by an action packed programme of activities, including shooting, archery, abseiling, climbing, bouldering and a widegame. The aim of the weekend was to demonstrate the possibilities of 'lightweight camping', using only small ultralight tents and Trangia Stoves. This brought up some interesting menu choices on the Saturday evening - tomato soup with chicken noodles anyone?

Friday 18th September

Well last night we had 27 Scouts turn up for the wide game at HolmeBrook Valley Park.
A good night was had and enjoyed by all who turned up.
A special thanks goes out to Padge who arranged the wide game and obviously to the rest of the leaders and young leaders who turned up to help.

I am just in the process of listing all the new patrols on the forum so take time to have a look if you missed last weeks meeting.

I have had seven replies for the camp in October. On the forms it says we can take 10, but that has been increased to 12. That will be the limit though.

Friday 18th September meeting

Don't forget this Friday we will be meeting at the top car park at Holmebrook Valley park at 7.30pm for a wide game. No need to come in uniform, wear some old clothes because you might end up a bit dirty.

Annual Camp Update

Just a quick update from Padge who is now safely (but unhappily) back in civilisation (still, at least I can have a cup of tea without Kieran meithering me!)

Tuesday saw the Scouts out cycling and wind surfing (although by all accounts there was more wind than surfing!), whilst Wednesday's day-trip was ice skating and swimming at Doncaster Dome. The evening activites were 'camp olympics' featuring hammer (mallet) throwing, three legged race and tennis-ball-and-spoon racing; and team manhunt. And unlike the England ashes squad, we didn't let rain stop play!

Thursday's challenge for Ben is "can we get to Alton Towers and back without losing anyone?"... so I'm sure there's be a report for Thursday and Friday once Skip and team get back at the weekend.

Yearly camp

This year the week long camp is at Walesby.
We are currently there, and so far everyone is enjoying it. There is a full range of activities, yesterday we had a dip in the pool, where GSL Ben somehow found himself taking an unscheduled swim!!!
Today the Scouts have been shooting, doing archery and are currently busy in the lake area raft building.
Tomorrow we are off to Rother Valley to have a day sailing. Wednesday we are going to the Doncaster Dome, for ice skating and swimming, then on Thursday we are going to Alton Towers for the day, Friday we stay on site for yet more activities and then home Saturday.
The weather hasn't been to bad yet and spitirts are still high.

I have now authorised Padge (assistant scout leader) to be able to post entries on here so hopefully there will soon be some photographs of the weekend.

A cold camping weekend according to the forecast

Well tomorrow afternoon there are four leaders and ten scouts off to Brunts Farm in Grindleford for a conservation weekend. The plan is that we go out with the conservation rangers and assist in all conservation type work, ranging from repairing dry stone walls to clearing river beds! I can't see us getting in many rivers but it still promises to be a good weekend.
I'm going to take a few bits of video footage when we're out and about so hopefully wil post some bits on here.
....now where did I put that extra sleeping bag and hot water bottle!!!

Podcasts

I have been experimenting the last couple of weeks with producing a podcast.
Well, i've had a great response from the two episodes i've uploaded so decided I will try and make it a regular thing.
You can go to iTunes, and do a search for Scout Leader Minute, and it will bring up the link to download. You can then subscribe to the podcast so iTunes will update each time you log on with new episodes.
It's still in the early stages for sound quality etc but with a bit more practice it should end up being quite good.
Try it out, you never know you might even enjoy it.

You will need to register to post new topics. This is to stop spam messages being posted.
It only takes a minute or so to register. Once registered you can post away. You will need a seprate password to enter the scouts only, beaver only, cubs only sections. Just send an email requesting one. These sections are for announcements specific to individual sections at 3rd Brampton where only the relevant authorised people will be able to view.

Please use the forum and check it regularly. It's for your benefit.

New program online

Happy New Year to you all, I hope you've had a good christmas and are now looking forward to a new scouting Year.
We will be having quite a few new members joining us over the next few weeks, coming up from the cubs so please go out of your way to make them all feel really welcome, remember back to your first days in the scouts, lots of new faces, not knowing many people etc. Remember if they need any help, please volunteer.

Okay, so the new program has now been uploaded, you should have already had a paper copy but check with the online one regularly for any last minute updates.

Please remind your parents that your term subs are due this week, and a reminder to those of you who haven't yet returned your cameras, next week will be the very last week to get them back. If you haven't returned them by then you will not be included in the assessments for the photography badge.

This week we will be announcing the new patrols and patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders. The points system will be starting this week from scratch, so best behaviour, turnout and effort is expected to get as many points for your patrol as possible. We will be having a term patrol winner and a yearly patrol winner. There will be good prizes for the winning patrol so do your best and good luck!

Snowdon 500 – A challenge for Prostate Cancer

16 May 2009

On the 16th May 2009, Scout Leader Carl, (Skip), Assistant Scout Leader Andy (Padge) and Group Scout Leader Ben, will be undertaking the Snowdon 500 challenge. We are trekking to the top of Snowdon, the highest mountain peak in England & Wales to raise money for Prostate cancer.

We are hoping to raise at least £2000.00 between us. If you would like to make a donation which would be gratefully received, or offer anything in the way of sponsorship, equipment, clothing etc, then likewise that would also be gratefully received.

12th December meeting

Just a reminder to those of you who didn't bring the cameras back last week, they must be in this Friday in order for you to qualify for your badge. Don't forget the £2.00 donation towards the costs please.

As you know we discussed the video production we are going to do, the best idea so far was Jacob's "Amarillo" style introduction. We will start filming after Christmas and have to mock up some different locations to film, so keep making a note of your ideas.

Sunday the 14th is bag packing at Sainsbury's, you should have had a letter notifying you about it by now, if not please give me a call.

The meeting on Friday 19th will be held at the same time as the cubs. We are doing a joint night, bring a burger or sausage and breadroll as we will be having a christmas tin can cook night, seeing as everyone enjoyed it so much last time, this time though yo will have longer to cook. You will also be cooking for the cubs, so all of you Jamie Oliver's out there, you get to shine. We will also be presenting the outstanding badges you have earned.

Photography task

Okay, here's just a reminder what subjects you need to capture for the photo assignment:
5 portrait picture
5 landscape pictures
5 still life pictures
5 animal or pet pictures.

Remember, don't make them all the same, do some close ups, mid range and distant pictures. You can be as creative as you like.

Bring the cameras back with you next week and make sure you have your name written on them. Don't forget to ask your parents for a £2.00 donation towards the cost of developing.

I will be posting the program for next term in the next few days so make sure you check it. There will also be a PDF download available so you can download and print off a paper copy.

Me and Ben had a meeting the other night and discussed the new patrols which will be implimented at the start of next term. There have been a few changes but hopefully everyone will be happy with the patrols they will be in. Whilst we have tried to keep most people together there may be a couple who have to change patrols, hopefully you will accept the changes and get on and thoroughly enjoy the new year and the program we have come up with. As you are all aware this term we have lost a few of the older scouts and we have new ones coming up. This has been the reason for the changes in patrols, so that we have equal numbers and experience in each patrol. We have also selected some new patrol leaders and also assistant patrol leaders.
By forming new patrols it will enable us to get the rewards points scheme working and because you have equal numbers in your patrols the scoring of points will be a more fair system as you all have the same chance to earn the same points.

So you are all aware this weekend I have completed a course so that we can have a proper shooting night and for those of you interested can take you through your Master of Arms award. One of the things we discussed on the course was getting an inter scout group shooting competition up and running with a possibility of having regular teams. Watch this space, but if you are interested let me know.

Wear a Poppy!

WEAR A POPPY

"Please wear a poppy", the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
And her face was old and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street,
Bouncing along on carefree feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
"Lady", said he, "may I have one"?
When she'd pinned it on he turned to say,
"Why do we wear a poppy today"?

The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered, "This is Remembrance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free,
That's why we wear a poppy, you see.

"I had a boy about your size,
With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
Free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by he learned and grew
and became a man - as you will, too.

"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while.
When war broke out and he went away
I still remember his face that day.
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mum, so please don't cry.

"But the war went on and he had to stay,
And all I could do was wait and pray.

And so when we see a poppy worn,

What's been happening?

Apologies for the lack of posts during the last month, only I have been extremely busy working. Some of you already know that I am a professional photographer, amongst other things, and during beginning of October I was shooting the annual charity calendar for Peak FM. The charity this year is Weston Park, so make sure of purchasing one, all proceeds will be going to Weston Park. Only a fiver! Then we went off to Spain and only got back this weekend.

Okay so this coming Friday is tin cook night. We're going to be giving a demo on how to make a hobo stove from a tin can, so if you want to bring a burger or sausage and a bread cob, you'll get chance to have a go.

We also have the remembrance parade this coming Sunday at St Thomas' church.

Spitewinter Bushtucker night

Well Friday saw us up at Spitewinter for our Bushtucker Gut & Cook night.
We had a good turnout and I would just like to say the "Flag" turnout and attention paid was commendable. Our new inspection system went down very well and only a couple of points were lost by the odd patrol. A great improvement, keep it up!
Well the lads got the fire going and then I demonstrated how to skin a pheasant, we then had numerous volunteers to actually do the gutting which was done quite well. Once cleaned up the pheasant was then filleted into small pieces and we cooked it in the pan over the open fire. I was suprised when everyone had a taste, and most people asked for more, but it was time then to get the beefburgers and sausages going, not quite BushTucker but certainly scouting, well on my behalf anyway, "being prepared"! Knowing that once food had been mentioned burgers and sausages would be welcomed.
Everyone had a great night and asked when could we do it again!!

Ben & Padge will be running this coming Friday's meeting as I have a committment I can't get out of so have a good time and i'll see you the week after.

This weeks meeting Friday 26th September

Just a reminder to everyone that this weeks meeting will be held at Spitewinter for our Bushtucker gut & cook night. Hopefully, if we can still get the "tucker" we will be doing a demonstration on how to prepare game for the pot! We will also have a few games, Manhunt has been requested so there may be a good chance we can get one going!
Please note the times for this weeks meeting 7pm-9.30pm. Bring a torch and wrap up warm as it's getting quite cool now once the sun has gone down.

Walesby Family Camp

Well this weekend was the planned family camp weekend at Walesby Scout Campsite. However because of all the bad weather we have been having recently, and the forecast bad weather for this weekend we decided earlier in the week to cancel the camp. This was mainly because a lot of the parents had never been on a camping trip before and what we didn't want was a repeat performance of the camp for the scouts, where everyone was soaked for the weekend!! So what happens? We get the best weekend weather of the year. Anyway we still ran with an activity day which we have just got back from. We had a good turnout of Scouts, Beavers and Cubs along with parents. A full range of activities included, archery, shooting, crate stacking, climbing and the one I enjoyed the most the raft building. Me and Padge have been taking photographs all day of various activities and personalities, so once Padge has sent me a copy of his images, i'll put together a slideshow and load it on here. No rush Padge, tonight will be fine..!!! Just joking, first thing in the morning will suffice..!! Thanks go out to everyone who made the effort in attending and making it a thoroughly enjoyable day, and also to Sue (Akela) for a lot of behind the scenes work in getting it all arranged, and everyone else who helped out. You all know who you are. Thank you.

Spitewinter & Summer camp

Just before the break up for the summer holidays we had an overnight stay at Spitewinter. The scouts were dropped off in Holmegate and had to make their way back to the campsite, without using roads, just using a map and compass. They were seperated into the patrols and set off at different timed intervals, knowing that theyhad to evade the hunter patrols (leaders) out looking for them. They all excelled in this task and were rewarded upon their return with the prospect of having to then build a shelter to sleep in before we got the fires going to cook them a hot drink and supper. A good time was had by all. Next up the first week of the six weeks holiday, was our annual camp to the Lake District. While the rest of the country basked in sunshine, it was rain, rain and even more rain up in the Lakes!! Not dampened by the weather everyone still enjoyed it.

Welcome to the 3rd Brampton blog page.
Hi, my name is Carl, the scouts call me Skip, I am their Scout Leader.
I am just in the process of setting up a new web site aimed just at the scouts of 3rd Brampton. We have a very succesful Beavers and cub's group and a current website, but we have decided that the scouts deserve a site of their own.
The aim of the blog page is to enable all of our scouts to read up to date happenings, for instance if they missed a meeting then they will be able to read all about it here.
I am trying to bring a part of scouting into the 21st century and nowadays most people have internet access, so this is just another way of spreading the good word of scouting.
If you would like to comment on any aspect please feel free. All posts will be moderated prior to being made public so there may be a delay between posting a comment and actually being able to see it online.

Finally, I am hoping that Scouts and parents will check this blog page regularly, as we can use this for posting latest updates, news, changes to programmes/plans etc, as well as email.
I will be posting PDF documents of all letters, notifications etc sent out on the download page of the site. Please check at least once a week.

I welcome comments from parents or scouts.
